What Can I Expect?
At Dadeland Oral Surgery our primary goal at your first visit (consultation) is to have the completed required administrative paperwork already in our system with you pre-registered before you arrive so we can efficiently be prepared before and therefore devote your visit to the exam and treatment planning process. The way we accomplish such is that the forms required to be filled out (TruForms) are available on our web site and can be submitted by using our secure web link. In the event you cannot fill out the forms and submit them before arrival to our office you will be given a computer notebook and the forms will then be completed by yourself and submitted. This will obviously increase the amount of time required for your entire office experience with us and we do ask if possible to please fill out as much of the required information as possible before arrival. Our office staff is trained to answer any questions you may have in regards to the information requested.
After registration is completed your physical exam will take place that may include studies such as digital radiography, 3-D CT Scan Cone Beam Radiography which is the most advanced x-ray technology available and offered in our modern office, and intraoral photography. Once the exam and required studies are complete Dr. Brown or Dr. Tamayo may communicate with your referring dentist or medical doctor if there are any questions or concerns that may arise during the initial consultation. The proposed treatment if any will be presented and options discussed. We provide various types of anesthesia including local anesthesia, laughing gas (nitrous oxide) and deep intravenous sedation and they will be discussed at the consultation visit as well. In addition to Dr. Brown or Dr. Tamayo going over with you the procedure required and what to expect after completion, an explanation of the procedure you may be having done as well as videos of such are available on our web site as are all pre-operative instructions and post-operative patient care information.
Once a treatment plan is agreed upon the scheduling and administrative details will be completed by our front office treatment plan coordinator. Our office policy is to achieve patient satisfaction with close follow up care after your procedure. You have a unlimited amount of resources available to you on our web site as well as Dr. Brown or Dr. Tamayo have a live person to person interactive phone service. If you have questions or concerns during non office hours all you need to do is call and your questions will be addressed by Dr. Brown or Dr. Tamayo. If you call during business hours and have to be seen or have questions for Dr. Brown or Dr. Tamayo will not be told, “the doctor is only here once a week or every other week”. Our practice is not corporate run dentistry, it is a private practice where Dr. Brown or Dr. Tamayo take responsibility for the total care of their patients everyday at the same office.
Again, our goal is to exceed your realistic expectations and provide care and compassion in a warm modern environment.
Initial Consultation
Your initial appointment will consist of a consultation explaining your diagnosis and treatment options. You will meet Dr. Brown or Dr. Tamayo and their patient coordinator to discuss your specific treatment plan and scheduling. A plan will be designed that will encompass your desires and goals as well as what Dr. Brown or Dr. Tamayo feel will help best achieve those. Occasionally, surgery can be performed the same day as the consultation. However, the treatment plan may require a second appointment to provide surgical services on another day.
Please assist us by providing the following information at the time of your consultation:
- Your U.S. Driver’s License or U.S. Identification Card. If you are a foreigner, your passport.
- Your surgical referral slip from your primary dentist and any diagnostic digital x-rays that may have been be emailed to you prior to the appointment if applicable.
- A current list of medications you are presently taking.
- A current list of medications you are allergic to and/or other allergic reactions.
- Medical and dental insurance cards.
IMPORTANT: All patients under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at the initial consultation visit. If a legal guardian is accompanying a minor, please bring the court ordered guardianship. Parents or legal guardians of patients of 18 years of age or older are encouraged to be present at the initial consultation to discuss the treatment plan with Dr. Brown.
A preoperative consultation and physical examination is mandatory for patients undergoing IV anesthesia for surgery. If the patient is scheduled or desires IV sedation, please have nothing to eat or drink eight hours prior to your surgery. You will also need an adult to drive you home.
Please alert the office if you have a medical condition that may be of concern prior to surgery (i.e., diabetes, high blood pressure, artificial heart valves and joints, rheumatic fever, etc.) or if you are currently taking any medications (i.e., heart medications, aspirin, anticoagulant therapy, etc.).
X-Rays
If your dentist has taken x-rays or a CT Scan within the last 12 months of your scheduled initial appointment, you may request that they forward them to our office via e-mail or mail. If additional films are required, they will be taken at our office.
